BTC/USDT BID, ASK and Spread Explained
A beginner-friendly explanation of the two live prices shown on a market panel and the small difference between them.
The short answer: The BID is the highest price currently offered by a buyer, while the ASK is the lowest price currently requested by a seller. The spread is the difference between ASK and BID and can change as liquidity and market activity change.
What the BID price means
The BID represents buying interest in the order book. It is the best currently displayed price at which a participant is willing to buy the asset. When market buyers become more aggressive, the best bid may move upward.
A changing BID does not independently predict the next candle. It is one part of the current market state.
What the ASK price means
The ASK represents selling interest. It is the best currently displayed price at which a participant is willing to sell. The ASK is normally slightly higher than the BID.
When visible sell offers are removed or new offers appear, the best ask can move quickly, especially during volatile periods.
How to calculate spread
Why spread changes
Spread is dynamic. A value displayed now can be different seconds later, so a live panel must continue receiving market updates.
- Liquidity available near the current market price.
- Sudden buying or selling activity.
- Market volatility and major news.
- The time of day and overall participation.
- Temporary connection or display latency.
BID, ASK and candle data are related but different
A BID/ASK panel displays the current best quoted prices, while a candlestick summarizes price activity across a fixed interval. A one-minute candle contains OHLC values; it is not simply a snapshot of one spread value.
Understanding the difference helps a member avoid assuming that one small movement in BID or ASK determines the completed candle.
Frequently asked questions
Why is ASK usually higher than BID?
The difference reflects the current gap between the best visible seller and buyer prices.
Can spread become larger?
Yes. Spread can widen when liquidity changes or the market becomes more volatile.
Does a narrow spread guarantee a green candle?
No. Spread describes current quoted prices, not the guaranteed direction of a future candle.
